Basaksehir 1-4 Gent: Orban scores Conference League fastest hat-trick

Nigerian forward Gift Orban is in the news again after he scored the fastest hat-trick in the Europa Conference League, in Gent’s 4-1 win at Turkish Süper Lig Istanbul Basaksehir in their Round of 16 clash on Wednesday.

The win ended Gent’s run of seven matches in Europe away from home without a victory to breeze into the last eight of the Europa Conference League.

The 20-year-old Nigerian striker scored three goals in three minutes to take his goals tally to five goals in five Europa Conference League matches

The new signing slotted home his first of the evening in the 31st minute from close range and added the second a minute later, before firing a long-range right-footed strike beyond goalkeeper Volkan Babacan in the 34th minute.

Gent, not content with relying on Orban’s heroics, added a fourth just before the half-time whistle, with strike partner Hugo Cuypers, heading home from Sven Kums’ cross.

The 20-year-old Nigerian starlet has now scored 12 goals in eight matches for the Buffalos across all competitions since making his debut February 11..

The sensational Nigerian striker’s goals have powered the Belgian outfit to their first quarter-finals since reaching the last eight of the UEFA Cup in 1991/92.

Meanwhile, head coach of Belgium U-19 team Wesley Sonck has advised Orban to spend more time in the Jupiler Pro League, before thinking of a move abroad.

The forward, who joined the Jupiler Pro League from Norwegian club Stabaek in January, disclosed on Sunday that he wished to play in the Premier League some day.

“My level has to be even higher if I ever want to play in the Premier League. There is still a lot of work to be done.”

Sonck, an ex-Genk star, praised Orban for his ambition to play in the English topflight league, but added that he needed more time to play regularly before switching to a higher league.

“I think it’s great that he is so ambitious. He is also fast, and he adapts well. I also have to admit that he easily scores a goal, that he is often in the right place.” he said, as quoted by Voetbalnieuws.

“But the Premier League or Bundesliga, that is still a few steps higher. Even with teams like Mönchengladbach or Frankfurt, you have guys like Thuram and Kolo-Muani in the front. That is still on a different level,” said the Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year for 2001/02.
