Dessers opens up on Feyenoord departure

Nigeria international Cyriel Dessers has opened up on why he left Dutch Eredivisie side Feyenoord last season to sign for newly-promoted Italian Serie A club Cremonese in last summer’s transfer window.

Dessers arrived in Genk 2020, but was the second-choice striker to Paul Onuachu and had to leave the club on a season-long loan to Feyenoord.

His transfer to Feyenoord yielded fruits as he had the most impressive campaign scoring 21 goals and adding six assists in 47 appearances across all competitions.

The 28-year-old striker was the top scorer in the Europa Conference League last season with 10 goals for Feyenoord.

But his season in Italy has been poor as the 28-year-old forward has struggled with form and has managed just six goals in 26 league appearances.

Feyenoord won the 2022/23 Dutch Eredivisie title after defeating Go Ahead Eagles 3-0 last Sunday with two games to go.

Reflecting on his move to Italy, the Nigerian striker revealed that the clause on his contract prevented him from sealing a permanent deal with Feryernord.

“It has not all been that easy,’’, Dessers said as quoted by Voetbalprimeur.

“There was a lump sum in my contract with Genk. It was never a question of just putting down that amount and I would have been owned by Feyenoord. It just wasn’t like that.

“That the club will probably have more budget later in the summer due to possible transfers. would have, that’s right.”

The former Gent striker is yet to replicate his last season’s form at Cremonese as La Cremo sit 19 on the table.

With three matches left to the conclusion of the 2022/23 season in the Serie A table and would need a miracle to survive relegation.
