Graduate dispatch rider dies in Benin crash

A graduate of the University of Benin, Freedom Ogbeide, who is a dispatch rider, was on Tuesday killed in an accident at NITEL Junction, Ugbowo, Benin, Edo State.

A former classmate of the deceased, who spoke anonymously for security reasons, said the accident involved the rider, a car and a truck.

He noted that the deceased started the job after graduating from the Department of Animal Science, UNIBEN, in 2021.

He said, “The deceased was my class representative till we graduated from UNIBEN in 2021. He was diligent and a good leader who took care of other people’s interests.

“The deceased still have both parents. We, his former classmates, are already in contact with his brother to know how to pay a condolence visit to the family. His corpse has been deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital’s mortuary.”

An eyewitness, who refused to disclose his name for security reasons, said a truck crushed the dispatch rider to death immediately after a car rammed into Ogbeide who was on his way to a destination in the state.

“He was crushed by a truck after his bike was hit by a car. He tried to get up but he couldn’t because of the impact of the fall,” the eyewitness said.

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Paul Okpe, confirmed the incident.
