Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a National Youth Service Corps member, Adebola Sodiq, for allegedly raping a 20-year-old lady.

The corps member was serving at a public school in Owode-Egba in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state when the incident happened.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident in a statement.

The PPRO said the suspect was arrested on Friday following a report lodged at the Owode-Egba divisional headquarters by the victim.

Oyeyemi said the suspect committed the offence on Tuesday when he lured the victim, who was a friend of his girlfriend, to his school after closing hour and raped her.

The PPRO said, “The victim complained that the corps member, who happened to be a boyfriend to her very close friend, came to her apartment where she lived with her coworkers on the 9th of May 2023 and asked her to follow him to the village junction to buy a gift for her in commemoration of her recently celebrated birthday.

“She stated further that as an intimate friend to the suspect’s girlfriend, she had no reason to suspect any foul play, hence she followed him. But while they were going, the suspect asked her to follow him to the premises of the school where he was serving in order to pick his wallet.”

He added that on getting to the school compound at Agbajege village, the suspect forcefully dragged her to his room where he had “unlawful carnal knowledge of her despite her pleading and crying for mercy.”

“Upon the report, the DPO, Owode-Egba division, CSP Olasunkanmi Popoola, detailed his detectives to go after the suspect and he was subsequently arrested.

“On interrogation, he confessed to the commission of the crime but claimed that he didn’t know what came over him as of that time,” the PPRO added.

He disclosed that the victim had been taken to the Owode-Egba General Hospital by the police for medical treatment.

Oyeyemi said the state Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Oladimeji, had directed that the suspect be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
